Dirtside / Full Thrust Kitbashing: Rimwerks KZ-09 Light Freighters

Todays project showcases a pair of kitbashed light freighters in the style of the Millenium Falcon - ie way faster and better armed than any honest tramp ought to be.  They're intended to be used with for roleplaying (Star Wars would be particularly appropriate), or for "up-scaled" Full Thrust or Starmada or the like.  At a stretch they'd work for ground combat games like Dirtside, although they're a bit small for 6mm - 2mm would work fine, though.

The model's main hull is an Asterian gun drone by Mantic Games, sans the big turret.  I've added a pair of ball-mount guns from Mantic's Asterian marionette box and the dorsal and ventral "saucers" are parts from the Dropfleet Commander space station kit.

The station kit parts are a particularly neat fit, since they cover the holes the hull has for the usual gun perfectly and can be installed as-is for a raised turret (on the right below) or trimmed down for a "buttoned-up" version with the turrets retracted down flush with the hull (left, below).

Since I didn't want to drill into the turrets I ran a mounting socket for the flight post in at an angle beside them, which gives them a nice dynamic swooping pose.  Might do another one at some point with the ship in "landed" mode, the little metallic balls (conceptually) being the retracted landing gear.

As you can see the main engine grill is on the ship's underside.  The rear "prongs" are intended to be the cargo loading doors, and are pretty small in 6mm-ish scale.  This is definitely more of a smuggler's ship hauling low-volume, high value cargo.  That category could easily include small units of infantry if you're a small-time mercenary or the piratical sort.

They're a good size for a very small starship in 2mm or (at stretch) 6mm, with 2" flight bases.  Total length and width are about 50mm, height is 25-30mm.

Ride 'em cowboy! Uh, cowbug? OutRim Colonial Ranger Cavalry Team

Today's post showcases some Stargrunt cavalry from Ground Zero Games, intended for use as a mixed-race cavalry ranger team from some OutRim colony.

The humans are from the Colonial Defense Force range:

The xenos on horsebugs can be found here:

All models are based on 1" washers, my preferred basing for 15mm bikes and cavalry.

A nice simple project, and a pleasant break between doing whole fleets and platoons of figs.

Full Thrust Kra'Vak new-sculpt Ships Stats and Gallery

This is a follow-up to last year's Kra'Vak-related posts:

https://brokenstarsburningships.blogspot.com/2018/11/full-thrust-kravak-gallery-and-rules.html

https://brokenstarsburningships.blogspot.com/2018/11/full-thrust-kravak-heavy-cruisers_18.html

https://brokenstarsburningships.blogspot.com/2018/11/full-thrust-kravak-fast-cruisers.html

Today we consolidate the suggested stats (including  few variants) and add fluff and images for all the newer ships painted since then.  Still some to do, which I'll add to here eventually.  But first, a word from UNDIA Central:

The widespread appearance of the so-called "Second Wave" Kra'Vak ship designs since shortly after the Siege of Sol began presents a number of concerns for the Combined Defense Command.  These vessels were originally believed to be reinforcements arriving from distant Kra'Vak holdings, representing previously uninvolved War Families and Clans joining the struggle.  However, close examination of wreckage suggests a more ominous explanation.  Study of power core flux signatures and hull micro-fracturing suggests that many of these vessels have been in active service for less than two years, a finding collaborated by the apparent inclusion of many design features that appear specifically aimed at countering human tactics and weaponry.  This would mean that these new ships are not only wartime construction on a staggering scale, but also that (owing to FTL transit times involved) they're being built somewhere much closer to human space than previously believed possible.

While this new data is deeply worrisome, there may be a silver lining to these new clouds of war.  Given the impossibility that these ships (new or otherwise) are coming from shipyards far beyond our frontiers, it seems that the Kra'Vak must have invested significant efforts into establishing fleet construction, repair, and logistics centers very near or even within our claimed volume of space.  It is even possible that their home systems are far closer to human space than previously thought.   Either way, it means the Kra'Vak have major strategic assets located somewhere well within striking distance of a counter-offensive from Outrim forces.  Destruction or seizure of these assets might well be the key to breaking the Siege and freeing up the Core fleets for offensive operations again.

The suggested stats below follow the rules from Fleet Book 2 with the addition of the 3-row hull rules from here:

http://star-ranger.com/UNSCpreview.htm

I've generally bumped up thrust ratings on the slower ships compared to older designs, since experience tells me low-thrust Kra'Vak ships are extremely hard to fly.  All the new ships also use 3-row hulls, which won't actually make them harder to kill but will keep more of their weapons and drive capability operational as they take damage.  They pay a lot (compared to human tech) for both guns and maneuverability, so keeping them active longer seems worth the trade off of even higher overall cost.  I've also pulled back a bit on the sheer number of scatterguns on some ships, and generally reduced the number K1 turrets across the fleet, using the mass saved for more thrust and hull boxes.
