Most of what they're after winds up as luxury foodstuffs for other silicon-biology life forms, with a strong secondary market being species in search of fertility-boosting minerals. My head canon says the "hard" mineral species breed more slowly than "soft" CHON types like humanity, but can increase their reproductive rate with certain rare minerals, often ones that are found only in trace amounts in their home environments.
